I’ve been a huge fan of the Tomb Raider series for years; it’s even grown to become one of my favorite video game series on the Mac, which says quite a lot considering there’s many great video game series that are on the Mac operating system. I would even note that the (2013) ‘Tomb Raider’ was my most beloved Mac game until I got my hands on the newly released for Mac ‘Rise of the Tomb Raider’.
The storyline of ‘Tomb Raider’ was fantastic it started when Lara Croft began an expedition aboard a research vessel “Endurance” in search of the lost kingdom of Yamatai with her friend Sam. The vessel is then “stranded on a mysterious and remote island hidden off the shores of Japan.” Lara then has to survive and explore the mysterious island and with the challenges that approach her. While the story was fantastic it lacked one major thing, the backstory of a younger Lara Croft and what made her into the “Tomb Raider” we know of her today. Besides that, Rise of the Tomb Raider follows up with Lara one year after the events in last game (Tomb Raider). Leaving her friends from the last game non-existed.
Storyline
“One year after the events of Tomb Raider, archaeologist Lara Croft is struggling to explain her experience of the supernatural on Yamatai and appears to be suffering from a posttraumatic stress disorder. Looking for answers, she turns to her late father’s research into the lost city of Kitezh and the promise of immortality. Her father’s partner Ana attempts to warn her off as his obsession with Kitezh drove him to ruin and suicide. Lara ignores her and organises an expedition to Syria, hoping to uncover the tomb of the Prophet of Constantinople, a key figure in the legend of Kitezh. Although successful, the tomb is empty, and Lara is interrupted by Trinity—an ancient order of knights that now exists as a paramilitary organization investigating the supernatural—and their leader Konstantin. As she flees, Lara discovers a symbol etched into the tomb that she links to a book on Russian religious history in her father’s study back at the Croft manor. A Trinity assassin infiltrates the manor and steals the book, prompting Lara and her friend Jonah to go to Siberia, which they believe has connection with the symbol. The two are separated after an avalanche while climbing a mountain and Lara is forced to continue alone, although this scene appears at the beginning of the game, followed by a two day flashback to the scene above.” -Wikipedia
The story of Rise of the Tomb Raider is fantastic and worth your while. It’s just as action-packed as the last game and not to mention the world is massive compared to 2013 Tomb Raider. It’s an absolute joy to play and an experience that I believe any gamer that loves action or adventure should give a try.
Performance
Back in 2014, when Feral ported Tomb Raider to the Mac they were able to get the game to run on many and most surprising they were able to get an AAA PC and console game to run on a Mac with Intel Integrated graphics. With the improvements of Metal 2, Feral Interactive was really able to open the range of Macs that support Rise of the Tomb Raider much larger than if the new Improvements to Metal 2 weren’t added. You can check out our article to see whether or not your Mac is supported; though if you have a recent Mac with an Intel Iris Graphics chipset or better you should be able to run the game. Though, I do highly recommend playing the game with at least the minimum supported system requirements as Rise of the Tomb Raider is quite a powerful game.

Overall
I’m a huge Tomb Raider and it’s not a big surprise that I like this game, though there are so many positives than negatives that it’s just a great experience; especially when you play on a Mac that has a Retina Display. Rise of the Tomb Raider is available on most major digital game services like The Mac App Store, Steam, MacGameStore, and a few others. You’ll be able to find Rise of the Tomb Raider for $29.99 on the Mac App Store and other places like Steam have it for $59.99 but I’ve already seen it go on sale as low as $19.99.
